John Sutter
John Sutter (1803-1880) was an early California settler who obtained a Mexican land grant for a huge ranch near modern-day Sacramento in 1841. The Gold Rush began in 1848 with the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, on Sutter's land in the Sierra foothills.
Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis
In 1873, were workers who searched all day in hope of finding gold in the the American West. They needed pants that could they could work and were comfortable. Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis created the first pair of blue jeans.
Samuel Brannan
On February 4, 1846, 27-year-old Samuel Brannan sailed from New York City aboard the Brooklyn. On board were 238 Mormons. They were in search of Mexican territory in California. They hoped to build a Mormon kingdom like they had in the United States.
